2014 Summer Camps

Let us help you keep your kids entertained and educated this summer. The College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware offers camps for all ages throughout the summer.

Preschool / Elementary School Age

21st Century Camps: Summer Explorations for 2’s & 3’s – July 7- August 1 (4 weeks)

This summer, children ages 2 and 3 will have opportunities to explore and play indoors and outdoors at the UD Campus Schools two or three mornings per week. Children will have  time to experiment with various materials and make new discoveries on their own, with their peers, and with adult support when necessary. Indoor activities will include art, blocks, dramatic play, manipulatives, puzzles, books, and sensory experiences, as well as  plenty of time to play and explore outdoors. We’ll swing, slide, ride trikes and scooters, play and explore with water, create art and enjoy the warm weather together!

Location: UD’s Children’s Campus, 459 Wyoming Road, Newark

Days: 2-year-olds on Tues/Thurs

3-year-olds on Mon/Wed/Fri

Time: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Cost: $300 for 2 days per week; $400 for 3 days per week

21st Century Camps: Growing Gardeners & Chefs – July 7- August 1 (4 weeks)

Calling all young food and garden enthusiasts! Children ages 4 & 5 can join us for an in-depth, hands-on exploration of the food cycle. Over this four-week camp, we’ll care for our herb and vegetable garden, harvest fresh foods, and prepare healthy snacks and meals. We’ll explore our surrounding culinary community and visit nearby farms, farm stands, restaurants, and other food venues. We’ll learn from food and garden experts including local chefs, farmers, and gardeners about the process of growing, harvesting and preparing the foods we eat. In addition, we’ll focus on the importance of physical activity and explore ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy.  Campers will also enjoy related literature, songs, writing opportunities, math, art activities and much more.

Location: UD’s Children’s Campus, 459 Wyoming Road, Newark

Hours: 9:00am-3:00pm, half day option: 9:00-12:00

Cost: $1,180 for full day or $650 for half day

21st Century Camps – Down by the Stream: Discovering Nature through Art and Art Through Nature – July 7- August 1 (4 weeks)

Children are natural born artists, scientists and explorers of their world. This four-week camp for children ages 5-7 will encourage participants to develop their inner artist through direct experiences with their natural world. Campers will explore outdoor spaces and streams along the James Hall Trail as well as the wetlands and gardens located adjacent to the school. Through shared interactions with nature and each other, children and teachers will practice problem solving, observing, and documenting- enabling them to see and appreciate the beauty in the everyday. Activities will include outdoor and indoor art experiences (painting, collage, clay, mosaics, and more), stream explorations, examinations of wetland plant life, and field trips. In addition campers will enjoy related literature, songs, writing opportunities, math activities, and much more.

The Early Learning Center’s World of Wonder – June 16 –  August 15

The Early Learning Center’s World of Wonder  is designed to engage children who have completed grades K – 3 in exciting, high interest activities that provide intrinsic motivation to develop skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.  In addition to daily activities, campers will participate in outings to the UD outdoor pool, bowling and skating.

Location: UD’s Early Learning Center, 489 Wyoming Road, Newark

Time: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm (Extended care is available at no cost)

Cost: $275 per week. Campers must sign up for the entire 9 weeks.

21st Century “ROBOTICS” Camp – 2 sessions offered: June 16 – 20 or June 23-27

Technology Camp (Robotics), for students now in grades 1 – 4, is a one-week program that provides students with an introduction to LEGO MINDSTORMS®NXT robotic devices, basic computer programming using MIT’s SCRATCH program and interactive games sessions.  The week will culminate with a Parent Presentation on Friday afternoon.

Cost: $295 per week

Hours: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

After-Care Available:  3:00-5:00 pm

Elementary Science Writing Camp – June 16-20

This summer, the Delaware Writing Project (DWP) invites students in grades K— 3 to join DWP Teacher Consultants for an exciting writing experience on the campus of the University of Delaware.  For one week, students will dip into their creative tool boxes as they make amazing discoveries and explore the worlds of nature, while learning to write about the smells, sounds and sights of summer.

Location:  The College School

Cost:  $250 /$50 late fee after May 31 deadline.

Elementary and Middle School

New Arc Academy – Marine Sciences July 21 – August 1

Program Full – Thank you for your interest

If your child, grade 4-7, is interested in marine science and engineering, this is the camp for them. They will learn about sharks, use LEGO MINDSTORMS® NEW EV3 and NXT robotic devices, learn MIT’s Scratch programming language and build their own bridge, turbine or pier structure.

21st Century Camps: Art Lab – July 7- August 1 (4 weeks)

Join us this summer, as we provide a rich, inspiring, creative experience for children entering grades 4- 7, in the glorious, light-filled art studio. This year, we will explore our own campus and beyond to encounter artistic endeavors in unexpected places! Tuition includes field trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore as well as other creative venues within our community. Adults are welcome to come along. Back in the studio, campers will explore a variety of two and three-dimensional techniques including; painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, culinary arts and more. Camp will conclude with an evening gallery reception for the presentation of your child’s masterpieces.

21st Century Multimedia Camp – 2 sessions offered: July 7 – 11 or July 14-18

Students in Grades 3-8 will use iPads and laptops to learn to produce creative multimedia projects including music, photos, and video. Projects will be driven by students’ personal interest. Students will also have arts & crafts and interactive games sessions.

Location: UD Children’s Campus, 459 Wyoming Road, Newark

Delaware Writing Project Digital Story Camp – June 23-27

Young writers in Grades 4-8 will learn how to transform their stories and memoirs into an audio and visual media presentation using Movie Maker. Students will work with two DWP teacher consultants on the writing process and production applications.

Location: Willard Hall Room 135, Main St., Newark

Cost: $250

Hours: 9 am – 3 pm

High School

Delaware Reading/Writing Project High School Writing Camp – June 23-27

Students in rising Grades 9-12 will learn strategies to use whenever they write, from the beginning of the process, through drafting and editing, to the final finished product. The focus will be on academic writing including developing a thesis, crafting an argument, improving critical thinking skills, and using sources appropriately and blending them into the writing.

Location: Room 040 Smith Hall, 18 Amstel Ave., UD’s Newark Campus

Cost: $250/$50 late fee

Hours: 9 am – 3 pm
