Read it Again Please! I Can Be Mindful Camp

Children love being read to and reading aloud to children is one of the best ways to build early literacy skills. In its 5th year, the I Can Be Mindful Summer 2019 Camp will focus on using classic and new pieces of children’s literature to teach and build mindfulness concepts and techniques.  To be mindful means to pay attention to the here and now with kindness and curiosity. It entails learning to bring awareness to our thoughts, emotions, and body sensations as they relate to what we are experiencing in a given moment; learning to approach these experiences with curiosity and to embrace them. Through mindfulness activities children learn to harness and maintain focus by staying present, to engage in creative problem solving and to cultivate compassion for themselves and others. Each day campers will explore these concepts through the lens of characters and experiences found in that day’s read aloud. Activities will be planned to help children make connections and to build the skills listed above. Camp activities will include daily yoga sessions and other mindfulness-based practices, community field trips, water-day Fridays, outdoor learning experiences, and more.
