Cintora applys Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad

Jose Garcia Cintora, a senior Human Services major, was one of three UD recipients of the 2017 Gilman Scholarship.

The Gilman Scholarship program, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, awards competitive grants to students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.

Garcia Cintora is applying his scholarship to a study abroad program in South Africa this Winter Session as part of a Human Development and Family Sciences program. There, he will fulfill his major’s experiential learning requirement and learn about the country’s most pressing social issues by serving in a local organization. He feels his experience abroad will be particularly valuable as he looks forward to a career in Student Affairs.

A Human Services major. with a concentration in Administration and Family Policy and a minor in Organizational and Community Leadership, Garcia Cintora has immersed himself in UD programs that support his fellow students. He has served as a Resident Assistant in Gilbert Hall, supervised 28 high school juniors and seniors during an engineering-focused summer FAME residential program, and served as a student representative for ASPIRA of Delaware aimed at increasing Hispanic and minority student’s college readiness and cultural competence.
