Assistant Professor Jarett Haley (PI) was awarded funding from the American College Personnel Association for a project titled “A Critical Visual Exploration of the Experiences of Racially Minoritized Graduate Students in Racial/ethnic Graduate Student Organizations Navigating State Bans on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.” ($4,600; 2024–2025).

Brittany Zakszeski (PI), Eric Layland (co-PI) and Tia Barnes (co-PI) were awarded funding from the Spencer Foundation for a project titled “Affirming and Protecting Minoritized Students: The Impact of State Education Policy on Mental Health.” ($75,000; 2025–2027).

In January, The College School (TCS) hosted 14 Fulbright scholars from Korea, who brought engaging lessons on Korean culture into every classroom and participated in a rich afternoon of cross-cultural professional development with our teachers. The visit highlighted the shared challenges and joys of education across borders and ended with heartfelt praise from our guests, who expressed a deep admiration for our school’s values and approach to education. 

In February, TCS hosted Career Day, where fourth to eighth graders explored STEM careers with seven guest professionals, while first to third graders brought their career research to life in a “living wax museum.” 

Throughout the fall and spring, TCS continued its partnership with CEHD’s School of Education (SOE) to offer Campus Companions, an after-school program pairing TCS students with elementary teacher education students for one-on-one academic and social support.This unique program not only empowers TCS students by strengthening their academic and interpersonal skills but also offers aspiring educators invaluable hands-on experience, deepening their understanding of how to support and engage today’s youth. Operating within TCS spaces, the college students are closely supervised by both Debbie Jones of the SOE and TCS Director Andrea Glowatz

Amanda Jansen has a partnership this spring 2025 with secondary mathematics teachers in the Cape Henlopen School District to explore how to integrate rough drafts and revising while mathematics teachers use their curriculum materials.

Professor Allison Karpyn has been appointed to the Food is Medicine statewide committee.

Assistant Professor Rosalyn Washington is now a board member of the Latin American Community Center where she facilitated the revision of the strategic plan and coordinated conversations with partners and stakeholders. 

As part of the Gates-funded CREATEd project at CRUE, the six-month Foundations of Knowledge Brokering program prepares participants to bridge research, policy, and practice in education. Led by Carolyn Hammerschmidt and supported by Isabel Lopez Hurtado, the program combines monthly modules and interactive workshops on topics like equity, facilitation, and evidence-informed change. 

Rosalyn Washington and Assistant Professor Jessica Slade attended the National Association for the Education of Young Children Public Policy Forum in Washington, D.C. from February 23–25, 2025. This was a boot camp for advocacy and garnering support for early childhood education policies. Attendees had the chance to visit Capitol Hill and speak with lawmakers.

External Awards

Stephanie Smith Budhai was selected to join the Association for Educational Communications Technology (AECT) Center of Excellence for Publishing Advisory Board.

Seven elementary teacher education candidates successfully completed seven weeks of student teaching abroad. Molly Johnson, Angelina Hobbs, Jayla Bensadoun, and Ceyanna Sauners worked in Seville, Spain at Colegio Internacional De Sevilla. Marquaya Bennett, Zaryana Molina-Brown and Bethany Snapp worked in Athens, Greece at the American Community School.

Students Taylor-Paige Guba and Monet Pollard received Graduate Scholars Awards.

Student Taylor-Paige Guba was awarded a funded spot to attend the Modern Meta-analysis Research Institute in Summer 2025.

The fourth and fifth grade STEAM classes at TCS engineered aquatic robots through a STEM engineering curriculum, funded by an Office of Naval Research grant. The project is led by Tyler Van Buren (College of Engineering), Jennifer Gallo-Fox and Zoubedia Dagher in collaboration with TCS master teacher Laurie Drumm
