For the second straight year and third time in the last four seasons, Elena Delle Donne has  been named the Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Player of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Additionally, Delle Donne grabbed spots on the All-Defensive Team and All-Academic First Team honors.

“It’s definitely an honor to be named this three times over my career,” Delle Donne remarked. “I like people to know that I’m far more than just a basketball player. I take academics very seriously and my entire life my mom and my dad have both raised me to be a wholesome person.”

A human services major, with a concentration in administration and family policy, Delle Donne became the fourth Division I women’s basketball player ever to be named the winner of the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year in back-to-back seasons by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The NCAA selects an Academic All-American team, and Delle Donne was then selected as the top student-athlete from among that prestigious group.

A Dean’s List student with a 3.62 grade point average, she manages to balance academics and athletics as the Colonial Athletic Association’s (CAA) all-time scoring leader and 20th in NCAA Division I history.  A three-time All-American, she also holds CAA records for field goals made (932), free throws made (702) and free throw attempts (773).  Delle Donne has also been named the CAA Player of the Year twice.

“Everyone knows the kind of outstanding player Elena is by watching her on the court night in and night out,” Blue Hen head coach Tina Martin said when Delle Donne won the 2012 NCAA academic award. “But what makes winning an award like this so special is that it shows the kind of person and student she is off the court as well.”

Delle Donne described her undergraduate years as a balancing act in which class work, athletic competition and hands-on work in her field of study—in particular, with young children—all played key roles.

“I have been blessed with the opportunity to receive an unparalleled education at UD,” she said. “Throughout my education I was not only privileged to have intelligent, experienced and passionate teachers, but I was also provided with several opportunities to apply what I have learned.”
