UD hosts social work conference on community wellness and youth violence prevention

In response to the needs of Delaware communities and beyond, the University of Delaware College of Education and Human Development will host a social work conference from 1 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, at Clayton Hall and Conference Center in Newark, Delaware.

Titled “Global Voices in Community Wellness and Youth Violence Prevention,” the conference will explore how positive developmental settings, strengths-based narratives, creative arts and more can work together to support long-term community well-being across diverse global contexts. Designed for Delaware social workers, treatment providers, educators and students from all disciplines, the event will examine community and identity-centered wellness strategies, Hip Hop-integrated therapeutic and empowerment practices and policy approaches to safety, among other topics.

The conference will also feature a keynote presentation from Allan Bernard, opposition senator in the Parliament of Jamaica and deputy spokesperson on social protection and social transformation. He will speak about “Violence, Structural Inequality and Community Capacity,” drawing from his work in Flanker, Jamaica.

Participants will network with other researchers and practitioners, learn about UD’s new master of social work program and hear from UD faculty and invited speakers working in local and international contexts.

Registration is $10 for external participants, but the conference is free for all UD faculty, staff and students.
