Urban Immersion, Inc.
Urban Immersion, Inc. is a 501(c)3 corporation founded by First & Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Wilmington, DE. Germane to this profile are two programs currently in formation:
The Corner: Where People Are First and Justice Is Central
The Corner Table: Where there Is Always a Place for You!
The Corner:
This is an urban immersion work camp that seeks to welcome visiting groups and adults and young adults to the city center of Wilmington and offer programs wherein they not only serve, but more importantly, form relationships with the underserved residents of the city. This is more than a hands-on building or relief effort – it is an opportunity for people to connect and develop a personal understanding of the living conditions of persons so often ignored and overlook in society.
The Corner Table:
A few years ago, a group of people at First & Central became aware of the plight of young people aging out of foster care and the group met for a number of months seeking a way to ameliorate some aspect of the challenges the young people face. After a systematic examination of the hurdles and obstacles, they found that many who age out are unfamiliar with basic kitchen, cooking, shopping, and nutrition skills and education. Hence, the church completely rebuilt its kitchen to state-of-the-art commercial standards and has equipped it as a teaching facility wherein 4 – 6 young adults, under the cheerful, yet watchful eye, of adult “sous chefs” prepare, in 5 2-hour session, basic menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner(2), and a party! Incorporated in the lessons are safety and cooking skills, nutrition and a balanced menu, shopping tips, and how to maximize and enjoy leftovers. Upon completion of the course, each student is provided a basic cook set similar to the tools they used in the class.
